A summary of the I.R.A and what occurred in Ireland?

Okay so I have been looking up some information on the Irish Republican Army so far and honestly I wish they would write it out plainly and easy to understand. Could someone please explain to me what they were and what happened in Ireland at the time? From what I have heard, they aren't good. Or at least what has happened has been far from "nice". Any information would be nice:)
